Think Only Beginners Make Mistakes While Lashing? Think Again!

You might think that being in the lash industry for many years makes you immune to those career-threatening mistakes we’re likely to make at the beginning of our careers. While that might be true in one sense, we can still make BIGGER mistakes which can be just as damaging. Let's discuss what these mistakes are and what you can do to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Not Increasing Your Treatment Prices

Having a steady client base for years and years is great, but there is a very human tendency to want to keep our clients happy, and we get it. We’d be nowhere without our clients, after all. However, not reviewing our prices can be very detrimental to the development of our business, to the point we may even lose money in the long run.

Why should you increase your treatment prices as a Lash Technician?

The longer you lash, the more things can cost. Products such as Pretreatment, Tweezers and Lash Glue may increase in price. Your business bills and living expenses can increase too, so your treatment prices need to reflect your costs, time and expertise. Don’t forget that eyelash extension treatments are a luxury, and many clients will understand a carefully explained price increase for the treatment they love, with the Lash Tech they love.

Sure, keeping our prices the same forever might keep our long-term clients happy, but it doesn't help a business keep up with rising costs. Of course, we might start to see the odd client a little less frequently if we raise our prices, as not everyone is on the same budget. But keeping our prices low forever is simply not sustainable. Whether you're doing lashes part-time or full-time, you'll need to price your treatments in a way that covers your costs and pays you for your work. Think about longevity!

Mistake 2: Only Taking One Lash Course

You don’t have to take every lash extensions course in the world, but staying up to date with information is so important. The lash industry is changing all the time, and what was deemed good practice a few years ago may have changed as our knowledge, skills and product quality improve. Knowing the history of eyelash extensions can give you some perspective on just how far this ever-evolving industry has come.

Sure, you can get a wealth of knowledge from forums, but how can we be sure we’re getting good advice? Look for relevant qualifications, course accreditation and practical support. Seek out a well-reviewed trainer who can take your lash game to the next level.

Mistake 3: Never Learning New Lash Styles

This goes a little bit hand in hand with the last point. You may miss opportunities if you only offer the same three lash styles or stop keeping up with trends. It’s very easy to become set in our ways, and it’s never a bad idea to have a speciality, but being able to cater to the wants and needs of your clients, both old and new, is always going to hold you in good stead.

Seek out styling videos on social media or keep up to date with our blog posts for lash styling ideas and techniques. For hands-on experience, look for a mentoring session with a Lash Trainer who can help you keep on top of what’s hot.

Mistake 4: Not Updating Your Social Media or Website

We know, keeping your socials up to date is sometimes time-consuming, and you’d rather be doing anything else when you’re so busy. Then again, maybe there are a few gaps in your treatment times and you’d love to gain a few new clients to fill them.

Keeping your Instagram pictures fresh and your website imagery, prices and treatment lists up to date helps potential clients understand what you offer. A professional, current portfolio also gives your existing clients something really special to show their friends who have heard so many great things about you. Treat your socials as a way of showing off your amazing work in one compact portfolio. For practical tips, read our guide to improving your lash business Instagram account.
